Coaching for meaning and purpose

We live in a volatile, uncertain, and complex world filled with bewildering ambiguity and constant upgrades. To say we live in a changed world is an understatement. We have more uncertainty, information, and challenges than ever before.

Big Data, Algorithms, and Digital empires are part of our daily reality. We have more information yet work with more uncertainty; we have more technological power yet have to negotiate an increasingly more competitive world. We are hyper-connected, distracted, and stressed, with little or no time to think.

The demand for cutting-edge leadership is higher than ever. Being able to lead mindfully is the next frontier of executive development. Leaders need to think differently to deal with challenges successfully. Scientific research confirms mindfulness as the most powerful way to create extraordinarily capable minds. Global companies such as Google, Apple, Intel, and Harvard have all introduced mindfulness programs similar to the one you are about to embark on.

Four global trends are causing gaps in the way businesses operate

Mental Health Gap
In 2022, the World Health Organization reported 50 million years of productivity lost to poor work habits, stress, and burnout.
Skills Gap
New technologies emerge at breakneck speed, and new skills are to be learned continually.
Meaning Gap
A decline of traditional structures like religion, family, and community has led to depression, nihilism, and a lack of direction. Global crises in recent years have caused movements such as the Mass Migration and the Grand Resignation, with millions of people leaving their jobs. Employees are seeking meaning and purpose at work. They are unprepared to spend time doing what they don’t value.
Productivity Gap
The average professional is only productive for two to three hours per day. They are interrupted every 11 minutes. The current way of working isn't working. According to a study by Time Magazine, the average office worker is interrupted 56 times per day. The majority of these interruptions are considered trivial. One study found that it takes the average employee up to 25 minutes to refocus after distraction completely.

Our search for meaning has become the primary quest of our time. We are constantly asking questions to understand what is happening to us. We all want a life that is significant and has value. We want to know that our lives and our efforts are worth it.

How I Work

My coaching approach is to help you discover more meaning and purpose, which is ultimately what drives us. I use the work of Holocaust survivor Dr. Viktor Frankl as a foundation and combine this with mindfulness.

Famous for his book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning,’ Frankl can tell us something about thriving in difficult times. His approach to life – logotherapy, is a simple but powerful philosophy for discovering more meaning and purpose. It helps us find out this in the face of adverse conditions. Life is often about our ability to turn a challenge into a triumph, and we come alive when we express our defiant will to do what we believe in. The trick is knowing how to do it.

I combine meaning with mindfulness. Over the past 15 years, I have facilitated more than 40 mindfulness journeys to India and Nepal, and I work directly with the Office of the Dalai Lama. This has enabled me to develop a unique coaching approach.

Mindfulness is the mental capacity to focus on what is happening. It is the development of internal emotional stability and control over your mind. It helps you stay focused, remain calm, and develop more profound insights into what is happening around you. This is the new frontier of human development. It is not about getting somewhere else but rather about being fully aware of where you are. It’s about taking control of your mind and using it to benefit the world around you.

Awareness of our existential realities and what is truly meaningful is the cornerstone of a good life. I combine cutting-edge behavioural science with ancient contemplative wisdom to help you future-proof yourself for tomorrow's challenges.

My driving forces are to be relevant, make a difference, and explore. I believe in this work; I know it is needed. I resonate with it, and I’ve seen how it can positively affect people. I see myself as an explorer—not necessarily the physical kind, but the type that ventures into mental places that can be daunting. Managing spiritual vertigo is part of what I do.

Who am I?

I'm a transition coach who helps people find their groove.

I help people reorientate towards meaning and discover a renewed sense of purpose.

Before coaching, I spent 25 years with the Advertising Group FCB, where I was Managing Director and Chairman of the Johannesburg office. Working with clients such as Vodacom, Toyota, FNB, and Tiger Brands helped me develop a deep appreciation for the challenges of top executives.
